Helicobacter pylori and gastric ulcers- a zoonosis? |
| Do houseflies or surface waters serve as sources of infection? |
Houseflies:
A recent publication suggested that houseflies may be capable of transmitting H. pylori. Involvement of this ubiquitous insect might explain why such a large percentage of the human population is infected and why infection rates tend to be higher in developing countries.
Surface waters:
A research team from Pennsylvania State University reported in June, 1998, the detection of infectious H. pylori from surface waters. It remains to be determined whether humans or animals can actually be infected from such waters.
